Top Ten New Traditional Country Artists, Volume II

We love us some new traditional country music, and are finding that we are not alone. Through our #StoneColdCountry show, we've come across a handful of artists that are infusing their experiences, style, and love for country music in their songwriting, and vocal delivery.

Y'all not everyone can sound like George Jones or Tammy Wynette, but the ten artists we are showcasing below are doing a pretty good job at raising that torch high.

  • Weldon Henson

He has 10 years of playing gigs and writing music under his sleeve and his contributions to Texas music were recognized by the city of Austin, when it declared February 25th “Weldon Henson Day.” He got the passion to play music when he was serving in the Air Force. Weldon has been playing music ever since.

Her song “On Paper” was inspired by an experience where one of her cousins had a significant other who wasn’t immediately approved by the rest of the family. She also keeps some great songwriting company. Her song “Smoke” was written by some friends of hers, Nicolette Hayford, Hailey Whitters and Jake Mitchell. The song is close to her heart due to the way it shows the beauty in honesty.The song "Smoke" embraces vulnerability and sends a clear message in support of being true to yourself.



  • Shackelford Lane

This brother team has been making music for years. Their song “Way Back Home” is about soldiers who never made it back home. The subject is near, and dear to their heart, since their grandfather died in WWII.




  • Sunny Leigh Shipley

Sunny was able to record her debut album after recovering from several autoimmune diseases, that she thought would end her career. The first song she ever released was “Don’t Let Me Sink,” a song she wrote with her husband for the John 4:14 Foundation, a foundation that provides clean drinking water to African communities by building water wells.

His debut album was produced by Roger Brown, who’s worked with Tammy Wynette and George Strait. Before music, he was rodeoing in high school and was introduced to great country music via his parents and grandparents. After graduating college, he decided to start focusing on his music career.

Her parents Kenny and Claudia Williams are the founders of the band Montana Rose. Legendary Bluegrass Carl Jackson supplies background vocals on “Your Forever Will Never Say Goodbye,” and the album features helps from the likes of Jerry Salley, Wes Hightower, Jon Randall, and Brennen Leigh.The latter being one of the women aside from her mother, who inspired and encouraged her as a fellow female artist with a traditional sound.

Jessi Alexander has nearly two decades of songwriting under her belt, and the cred to boot. She’s won CMA and ACM Song of the Year. She’s written songs recorded by Patty Loveless, Miranda Lambert, and Trisha Yearwood, among others. She rejects the dichotomy of being solely a songwriter or a performer. She does it both, and is so good.

He began performing acoustic shows in college, which is when he realized that people actually paid attention to the songs he’s been writing ever since highschool. His song “Ranch Girl Dream” is inspired by a specific “ranch girl” fashion style he sees often worn by women at bars around Texas.

Bryan James has performed at the Tumbleweed 2018 & 2019 and Tailgates N Tallboys, Swanee River Jam and more. He prides himself in writing songs people can relate to.

He was born and raised in Knox County, KY, while his father’s side of his family is from Big Rock, Virginia. Coal has been an important part of his family since forever, and like many families, it is not an exaggeration to say it is everything. Elswick enjoys hunting, spending time with his family and of course, country music.
